Winter Season Favorites...
Winter season is upon us and our thoughts wander to all the wonderful things
the season has to offer.
The web is full of holiday stories and offerings, but this year we at
Powerful Recipes wanted to give you something a little different and
something that would sustain you through the holidays and beyond. We started
thinking about the season itself!
What does WINTER really mean to us and what are some favorite things about
winter. Not everyone lives in areas where cold temperatures and windy, icy
days and nights prevail. However when most of us think of winter, we think
of just those things. Many who live in areas with year round warm climates
travel to areas that offer the wonders of the cold season.
What are YOUR
favorite Winter things?
Just about everyone loves the holidays with opportunities for family
gatherings and of course gift giving. Gifts are GOOD! But the lasting
memories are more of visits with family and friends and of the many comfort
foods enjoyed at holiday times. Fresh baked breads, warm hearty soups,
turkey dinners with all the trimmings, delicious ham dinners. Whatever your
personal favorite is, winter foods are quite unique to the season.
Hot cocoa, maybe with marshmallows… Holiday cookies and treats are special.
It all lends to fond memories of winter itself. Maybe a new tradition this
year… how about making cookies for Groundhog Day? You need a boost in
February, we know you do!
Maybe you enjoy outdoor activities. Winter walks, sports like
snowboarding
or skiing, crisp winter air, snuggly coats, hats, mittens,
sledding, many
embrace these things and can hardly wait to enjoy
them during the season.
Indoor winter favorites might include warm fires in the fireplace,
sleeping
in under extra blankets, candle light for the long winter nights,
watching a
gentle snowfall from a window
(
you know the kind of snowfall with gigantic
flakes
each one unique in crystalline structure).
Whatever you personal favorite happens to be, embrace
winter and take time
to enjoy all the season offers.
Many times it’s the simple things that are
most treasured and remembered.
Pet Health Insurance...
Do You Really Need It?
Good advice a few years ago might not be good advice today.
Read below and decide for yourself.According to a recent article at money central msn (http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Insurance/AssessYourNeeds/ShouldYouBuyPetInsurance.aspx)
Most people are better off forgoing pet insurance and instead put money they
would have spent on premiums into a savings account for eventual care of
their pet.
That was good advice in the past but with advances in pet care, expenses for
pet care have dramatically increased. As the article points out, many
procedures formally reserved for humans are now routinely performed on pets.
If you’re the type of person that would do anything to save your pet during
a pet medical emergency, pet insurance might be a better solution than
facing huge expenses when tragedy happens. What's changed in recent years
is the state of veterinary science, as well as the economics of running a
veterinary practice. Vets today can offer treatments that were unheard of
just a few years ago -- and at prices that could make you howl. Consider:
- Treatments once reserved for humans, from radiation therapy to
kidney transplants, are now available for pets. That means once-fatal
conditions are now treatable at costs ranging from $1,000 to more than
$5,000.
- Vets have access to increasingly sophisticated and costly diagnostic
tools, such as MRIs. Such screenings not only boost the cost of exams
but often detect problems that once would have gone unnoticed and
untreated.
- These expensive tools and procedures have helped create health care
inflation in the pet doctor world.
Of the estimated $45.4 billion Americans will spend on their pets in
2009, $12.2 billion -- 27% of the total cost -- is expected to be devoted to
veterinary care, according to the American Pet Products Association. That
would be a 10% increase from 2008. With health care on the minds of many,
it seems timely to consider providing adequate health care for our furry and
feathered friends. Like anything else, investigate your options carefully.
Look at the deductibles and exclusions in any policy and decide the best
path for you.
